M O V I N G F I L E S A R O U N D
One of the most basic things required to operate your ST in the way that you
want, is to be able to take files from one area and transfer them to another
area. This is very easily done. Read on.
To begin with, it's a good idea for the novice to get a more simple idea of
the principal of folders and files. If we assume that a disk is a cardboard
box, and the files are sheets of paper, each with information on them, we can
see why it's not a good idea just to lump sheets upon sheets into the box
without some kind of order to them. It would make more sense if we could
sort the sheets out somehow, so that we can find one that we want
easily. In order to do this, we could get hold of some normal paper folders
and put sheets that are related to the same subject into their own
folder, then put the folders in the box.
The principle of disk storage is much the same. If we have 20 files on a
disk, 5 are pictures, 5 are text files, 5 are games programs, and 5 are art
programs, and they have been loaded onto the disk one after another, when you
click on the disk drive icon and view the contents of the disk, you'll have 20
files with no order to them and you'll have to search about to find the one
you want.
An easier way to organise your disk would have been to create 4 folders
first, each with a name to relate to it's contents. If they were called in our
example, PICTURES, TEXT, GAMES, and, ART, and we've have saved the files
into their own folder, when we clicked on the drive icon we'd have been
presented with the 4 folders and by double clicking on the one we want, we
would have shown it's contents and found the file we'd been looking for more
easily.
To create a folder, simply double click on the drive icon to show disk
contents, go up to the FILE heading at the top of the screen, select NEW
FOLDER and type in the name you wish to give it, okay it in the box and the ST
will now create a folder for you with the name specified.
To transfer a file into this folder from the SAME disk, simply click once on
the file to highlight it , but keep holding down the left mouse button, and
drag the mouse pointer directly on top of the folder that you wish to
transfer the file into, and when IT highlights, let go of the button. The ST
will then take care of the transfer. If you have several files to do, or would
like to check to make sure the files are tranferring okay, then you can
double click on the drive again and another window will appear with exactly the
same info as the active window. You then can double click on your folder and it
will show the contents, (initially nothing of course), and then you can
highlight a file in the first window and drag it to anywhere on the second
blank window and the file will be transferred again, but this time you will
see it in the second window after transfer is complete. After completing the
operation you will of course have to delete the file from it's original
position or you'll end up with 2 of everything and quickly run out of disk
space.
To transfer a file from another disk, it's a bit different, unless you have an
external or "B" drive. If you have a "B" drive simply double click on both
the "A" drive icon and the "B" drive icon to show their contents, and then
proceed as the last example. If you don't have a "B" drive, the ST will
pretend to itself that you do, and treat the main internal "A" drive as the
"B" drive too, when you ask it to. And you do it like this. We'll say for
instance that you have sorted out your original disk that we talked
about, and that it now has 4 folders with 5 files in each folder. You have a
picture file on another disk that you'd like to put into the picture folder of
this disk. Firstly insert your disk with the folders into drive "A", and
double click on the "A" drive icon. The disk contents will display. Now, Double
click on the drive "B" icon. The ST will now ask you to insert disk "B" in
drive "A". Put in the disk with the piccy you want, and the ST will now
display the contents of the second disk. To transfer a file from disk "B" to a
folder on disk "A" simply click on it to highlight it, hold in the mouse
button, and drag it over the relevant folder on the drive "A" window. When the
folder highlights, let go of the mouse button. Follow the on screen prompts
until the tranfer is complete.
You can now shovel your files about to your heart's content.
